The temple is a representation of the physical body (sthoola sarira) which houses the presence of Divine. The Garbagruham or sanctum sanctorum represents thehead, the Vimana above the Sanctum represents the tip of the nose, the Ardhamandapam in front of the Sanctum represents the neck, the Maha Mandapam is the chest, the Prakaras around the Sanctum are the five senses, the Balipeetam where neivedhyam is offered represents the navel, the Dhwajasthambam represents the jeevadhara or life generating power of the presiding deity and the Raja Gopuram represents the feet.
